The idea

01Safari from the beach — how it works

Diani’s location makes it one of the best places in Kenya to combine a beach holiday with a safari. You don’t have to choose between bush and beach — you do both in one trip.

Most safaris from Diani are fly-in: a short flight from Diani (Ukunda, UKA) connects through Nairobi Wilson to the safari airstrips at the Mara, Amboseli, Samburu and beyond. You land near your camp, game-drive in a 4×4, then fly back to the coast — often finishing the safari and returning to the beach the same day. Tsavo, the closest park, is also easily reached by road, which makes it ideal for short 1–2 night trips or even a day trip.

Common questions

Safaris from Diani — FAQ

The questions travellers ask most before booking a safari from the coast.

Yes — Diani is one of the best beach bases for safari in Kenya. Tsavo is reachable by road for day and overnight trips, while the Maasai Mara, Amboseli and Samburu are easy fly-in safaris routed via Nairobi Wilson.

For iconic big-cat and migration action, the Maasai Mara. For the quickest, cheapest safari, Tsavo by road. For elephants and Kilimanjaro views, Amboseli. Many travellers combine Diani with one fly-in park for the perfect bush-and-beach trip.

As a guide, a short Tsavo road safari can start from a few hundred dollars per person, while a mid-range fly-in Maasai Mara safari typically starts from around US$1,800 per person, with luxury and longer multi-park trips costing more. Prices vary by season, standard and group size — enquire for an exact quote.

You fly from Diani (Ukunda, UKA) and connect through Nairobi Wilson to the park airstrip, where a guide meets you for game drives. You stay in camp, then fly back to the coast — often the same day. It saves the long drives that road safaris involve.

Typically the safari flights, all park fees, full-board accommodation, game drives in a 4×4 with a driver-guide, and transfers. International flights, visa/eTA, insurance, tips and optional extras like balloon safaris are usually separate. Always check each quote’s inclusions.

Wildlife viewing is good year-round. The dry seasons (roughly June–October and January–February) are prime, and the Mara’s Great Migration typically peaks around July–October. Green season (April–June) is quieter and better value. See our best-time-to-visit guide.
