Diani Airport Transfers & Ground Transport

Getting from Diani Airport (Ukunda, UKA) to your hotel is quick and easy — but it needs arranging. Central Diani is a short 10–15 minute drive; Galu is around 15–20 minutes; southern and island areas like Msambweni, Chale and Shimoni take longer. Your options are a pre-booked hotel or private transfer (best), a shared shuttle, a taxi, or self-drive car hire. Below: transfer times and indicative costs to every south-coast area, plus exactly how to brief your driver.

01Your transfer options

Four ways to get from the airport to your accommodation. For most visitors — especially first-timers, families and anyone arriving tired — a pre-arranged private transfer is worth it: your driver is waiting with your name, and there’s no negotiating on arrival.

🚐Recommended

Hotel / private transfer

Pre-booked door-to-door in a private vehicle. Driver meets you by name; fixed price; no hassle. Best for families, luggage, and peace of mind.

🚌

Shared shuttle

Cheaper per person, but may wait for other passengers and make multiple drops. Good value for solo and budget travellers.

🚕

Taxi / tuk-tuk

Available on arrival. Agree the fare before you set off. Tuk-tuks suit short central-Diani hops; taxis for longer or luggage-heavy runs.

🚗

Car hire

Self-drive freedom for exploring the south coast. Best if you’re staying a while or want to roam; less ideal just for a one-off airport run.

Private vs shared — quick ruleTravelling as a couple or family, or arriving late/tired? Private. Solo on a budget with light bags and flexible time? Shared. Either way, pre-book so someone is expecting you.
By area

02Transfer times & costs by area

Transfer time and price depend on where you’re staying. The airport sits just inland near Ukunda, so central Diani is very close, while southern and island areas are a longer drive. Costs below are indicative for a one-way private transfer and vary by operator, vehicle, season and fuel — always confirm on enquiry.

Destination areaDrive timeIndicative private transfer
Ukunda town~5 minLowest — very short hop
Central Diani (main hotel strip)~10–15 minfrom ~US$15–25

Note on pricesFigures are rough guides in US dollars for a standard car, one way. Larger vehicles, night arrivals, and island/boat legs cost more. Many hotels include or arrange airport transfers — check your booking before paying separately.
The long transfer

03Transfers from Mombasa (MBA)

If you land at Mombasa Moi International (MBA) rather than flying into UKA, you’ll need a road transfer of roughly 1–2 hours to Diani. The route crosses to the south coast either by the Likoni ferry (shorter in distance but subject to queues, especially at peak times) or the longer road around the lagoon. This is exactly the transfer that flying into Diani lets you avoid.

Mombasa → Diani road transfer
Distance~30 km south
Time via Likoni ferry~1–1.5 hr (queue-dependent)
Time via lagoon road~1.5–2 hr
Indicative private transferfrom ~US$50–90

Self-drive

04Car hire at Diani Airport

Prefer to drive yourself? Car hire gives you freedom to explore the south coast — Tiwi, Shimba Hills, Shimoni and the beaches beyond — on your own schedule. It makes most sense for longer stays or trips where you’ll move around a lot, and less sense purely for a single short airport-to-hotel run, where a transfer is simpler. Rentals are best arranged in advance for airport pickup.

05How to brief your driver

Confusion between “Diani,” “Ukunda” and “Mombasa” is the main thing that goes wrong. Give your driver clear details in advance and arrival is seamless.

Confirm the airport: Diani / Ukunda (UKA)

Make sure everyone knows you’re landing at Ukunda / Diani (UKA), not Mombasa — they are on opposite sides of the water.

Share your flight details

Give your airline, flight number and arrival time so the driver can track it and be there when you land.

Give your name and phone number

So the driver can hold a name board and reach you if you miss each other at a small, busy arrivals area.

Provide your exact hotel / villa

Full accommodation name and area (Diani, Galu, Tiwi, etc.) — some villas are hard to find without it.

Agree the price up front

Confirm the fare and currency before travel so there are no surprises on arrival.

Don’t rely on “Diani Airport” aloneSome drivers and apps know it only as Ukunda. Say “Ukunda / Diani Airport, code UKA” to avoid being taken to Mombasa.
Book with confidence

Arrange your Diani Airport transfer

Tell us your flight, your hotel and your party size, and we’ll line up a driver to meet you at UKA — no negotiating on arrival, no confusion with Mombasa.

Common questions

Diani Airport transfers — FAQ

The questions travellers ask most about getting from UKA to their hotel.

Central Diani hotels are about 5 km from the airport — roughly a 10–15 minute drive. Galu is a little further south (~15–20 min), while southern areas like Msambweni or Shimoni are 45 minutes to well over an hour.

Indicatively, a private transfer to central Diani is around US$15–25, and to Galu around US$20–30, with longer runs costing more. Always agree the fare before you set off, and consider pre-booking so a driver is waiting.

Pre-booking is recommended, especially for families, late arrivals or villas that are hard to find. Your driver waits with your name, the price is fixed, and there’s no negotiating when you’re tired. Many hotels arrange transfers too — check your booking first.

By road, roughly 1–2 hours, crossing to the south coast via the Likoni ferry (subject to queues) or the longer lagoon road. Flying into Diani (UKA) instead avoids this transfer entirely. See our Diani vs Mombasa guide.

Yes — self-drive car hire can be arranged for airport pickup and is great for longer stays or exploring the south coast. For a single short airport-to-hotel run, a transfer is usually simpler. See our car hire guide.

Tuk-tuks are common around Ukunda and Diani and suit short, light-luggage hops to central Diani. For longer distances, more luggage, or a tired late arrival, a car transfer is more comfortable. Agree the fare first.
